Meet Effie & Mat
Yoga teacher, Acupuncturist, Massage Therapist & Mushroom Hunter
Effie grew up in Tel Aviv where she spent much of her time as a trekking guide in hills & deserts of Israel. She later lived & studied yoga in India & Chinese medicine & acupuncture in China before moving to England to continue her studies. After graduating from the International College of Oriental Medicine she set up About Balance in Brighton (UK), a community focused studio with the mission of making wellbeing practices affordable & accessible to all. About Balance continues to this day, with more than 40 different therapists providing therapies & classes to the local community. For Effie, Cariton Retreat provides the opportunity to extend her wellbeing practice from just single 1 hour yoga classes or 45 minute massage therapies at her studio, to a more immersive wellbeing experience. For her, staying at a place like Cariton means that the rest & relaxation or nourishment & energisation does not end with the session, but continues beyond due to the wider space & environment.
Winemaker, Educator & Cycling Fanatic
Mat is originally from England & spent his early life on a sheep farm on the edge of the North York Moors. After studying sociology & philosophy at university & then living & teaching in Japan for several years, he decided to convert his love of wine from a hobby into a career. He initially worked in the London wine trade, selling fine wine & using his teaching experience to do public wine masterclasses, before realising that it was actually possible to still work with wine & live the countryside. This realisation prompted a return to university, but this time to study winemaking. On graduating he went to the Napa Valley, California to work for Stags’ Leap Winery & later returned to England, attracted by the burgeoning wine scene, to make wine for Sussex producer, Albourne Estate. Cariton Retreat offered Mat the chance to bring his passions for wine, teaching, hosting (& cycling) together in one place.
